In 1965, Oldenburg began to make drawings of colossal monuments. These arefantastic proposals for sculptures that represent everyday objects enlarged togargantuan proportions in relation to particular places. Among them are a giantelectric fan to replace the Statue of Liberty and an enormous pair of scissorsto replace the Washington Monument. Oldenburg employed the term "monument"ironically for his antiheroic subjects, which deliberately subvert traditionalnotions of public sculpture.
